Sunset Recreation Center & Playground (located on Lawton Street between 28th and 29th Avenue) has welcomed area residents to play, sports, social, and education activities since 1940. Nearly $14 million has been allocated from the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond to completely renovate the 18,000 square-foot building and 3.5-acre site. The building renovations include a seismic upgrade, ADA compliance, new fire sprinkler system, and complete replacement of the restrooms, doors, windows, roof, and all mechanical and electrical systems. The site improvements include renovation of the playground, tennis courts, ball field, and landscaped areas. The project will be LEED Silver Certified. The center is scheduled to reopen in September 2012.
The Bond funding does not permit the purchase of furniture and equipment, and city-wide budget cuts impede the Recreation and Parks Department’s ability to properly outfit the center. The Center will need desks, tables, chairs, and sports equipment in order to deliver its programs. The initial cost estimate for these items is $82,000.
